Like you I was also a contractor at one time, and also wound up being not only the fixer, but also the onsite computer instructor. However, BEFORE anything went into the system, many calculations and research was done by hand. Research because I found that much of the clients information had not been entered by the employees (who did not know how to enter information). Calculations because Win95/Win98 had their glitches, as well as a number of softwares (Peachtree was notorious in this regard), and so I had to do a lot both in my head and on a ten-key to ensure that numbers were accurate. Even then, I did a lot of accounting by hand, because I wanted verifiable backup should numbers come into question.
